Some contractors handling road projects in Imo State have abandoned them after turning out sub-standard jobs, National Mirror investigation revealed yesterday.

The roads, particularly the Owerri-Aba road, are now in total disrepair less than five months they were certified completed.

Last week, the contractors were seen making frantic efforts to mend washed parts of the road.

But some motorists, who were irked by such shoddy jobs, called on the state government to conduct thorough investigation on all executed road projects across the state.

They complained that the construction was substandard as some parts of the roads wear off soon after completion, adding that the government should revoke such contracts as the contractors are not competent going by the way they are handling the projects.

“Even the water channels and culverts are not properly done. We want the project monitoring team of the state government to give the true picture of the state of these projects,” a motorist, Sunday Amadi told National Mirror.

He said: “The Owerri- Aba road, including Akachawa, linking Wetheral road are all in disrepair few months after the job was supposedly completed.”

Although, it was learnt that the state government had queried some of the contractors, particularly those that handled the Aba- Owerri road project, it was not certain what the government would do for such shoddy jobs done as part of the road had formed deep gullies that now make it difficult for motorists to manoeuvre.

Contacted, Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Dr. Theodore Ekechi, said these roads were in terrible shape when the current administration came into office.
