Top officials of the Ogun State Government House were on Monday arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with the alleged N41.7 billion fraud now rocking the state.
A reliable source close to the commission listed those arrested to include Ganiyu Sa'id, Badejo Ajiola, Ibrahim Oladele, Odunlami Toyin, Sola Okanlawon and Modupe Akinlola.
Daily Independent gathered that all the six officials are staff of the Account Department of the Ogun State Government House.
It was also learnt that stacks of documents have been carted away from the offices raided by the EFCC.
The source said the documents recovered from the offices will be transferred to the headquarters of the EFCC today for further examination.
The EFCC had launched a fresh probe into the alleged mismanagement of about N41.7 billion by the Ogun State Government after it had begun investigation into an alleged diversion of another N30 billion allocated to local governments in the state in June.
The fresh allegations, however, border on illegal debt servicing, diversion of loan, fraudulent procurement and abuse of contingency and miscellaneous votes.
Chairman of the EFCC, Farida Waziri, had set up a six-man panel to look into the allegations against the state.
The panel subsequently compiled a list of officials of the state the commission needed to interact with.
The state government is being accused of non-remittance of N1 billion deducted from Ogun State workers' salaries, fraudulent and illegal payment of N1 billion purportedly as counterpart funding for water projects and illegal debt servicing to the tune of N5.2 billion as against an appropriation of N350 million for the same purpose in 2009.
It is also accused of payment of N300 million electricity utility charges by the State Electricity Project Agency despite direct deduction of same from various ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) and diversion of N500 million agricultural loan granted by the National Agricultural Credit Bank for Rural Development, among others.
When contacted, Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Femi Babafemi, confirmed the arrest of the officials, saying it is all part of on-going investigation into the case against Ogun State Government.
