There are a number of organizations which try to make a positive impact on children and empower them to succeed. Big Brothers Big Sisters is one such organization. Each time they pair a child with a role model, a one to one relationship is built on trust and friendship that later blossoms into a future of unlimited potential.

An independent national research organization, Public/Private ventures, which is based in Philadelphia, made a study among 950 boys and girls from eight Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across the country taking into consideration their large size and geographic diversity. Half of the children were randomly chosen and were matched with a Big Brother or a Sister. The rest of the children were assigned to a waiting list. The selected children were allowed to meet their Big Brother or Big Sister about three times a month for approximately a year.

A study was made on the matched and the unmatched children and their parents on two occasions – when they initially applied for a Big Brother or Big Sister and again 18 months later. The study showed that the children who were in constant touch with their Big Brother or Big Sister were found to be 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class and 33% less likely to hit someone.
