The Peoples Democratic Party won all the 24 local government chairmanship positions contested for in Saturday’s council polls held in Niger State, the Independent Electoral Commission Chairman in the state, Mohammed Abubakar has said.
Mr Abubakar told reporters at the commission’s office yesterday that there was no result for Kontagora, the one local government where there was violence and the election had to be cancelled.
He said the commission regretted the behaviour of some party leaders who caused the breach of peace that led to the nullification of the polls in Kontagora.
He named the winners of the polls: Abdullahi Kwatu for Paikoro local government area; Isah Estu-gaie for Agaie council, Aliyu Halidu (Agwara), Umar Edota (Bida) and Mohammed S. Pissa (Borgu).
Others were Ladidi R. Bawa for Bosso Council, Yakubu M. Sallau (Chanchaga), Idris L.Gimba (Gbako), Adamu Gani (Gurara) and Isah S. Baka for Lapai council.
Mr Abubakar told the newsmen that the chairman of Edati local government area, Isah L. Kantigi was returned unopposed polling 44,789 votes, as was Mohammed Babanna, who was the chairman of Katcha Local Government Area.
He said PDP’s Adamu N. Tessan also won the council chairmanship seat for Lavun council while Adamu Garba clinched the seat for Magama, Kabiru Tanko (Mariga), Mohammed Z. Manngi (Mashegu), Sonfada Jiya (Mokwa) and Danjuma B, Baro (Munya).
Nasiru B, Shambo won his re-election bid for Rijau council, while Pius Peter won the Rafi council’s chairmanship seat. Abdullahi Yerima won in (Shiroro), Yunusa Adamu (Suleja), Jibril M.Kallamu (Tafa) and Saidu Abubakar for Wushishi council.
He said that the Kontagora local government elections which was suspended will be decided by the commission after due consultation with security agents.
