Imo State Governorship Election Re-run to hold May 6 : A statement from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC Nigeria), after its meeting in Abuja on friday and signed by Abdullahi A. Kaugama, Secretary to the commission, said, “Following the April 26, 2011 governorship election in Imo State which the Returning Officer ruled inconclusive, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled supplementary election to hold in selected areas on Friday, May 6, 2011.

“The supplementary election will hold in four local government areas namely Ngor-Okpalla, Mbaitoli, Oguta and Egbema; as well as in Orji Ward in Owerri North Local Government Area.
“INEC urges all stakeholders to ensure the highest level of integrity and good conduct in the supplementary election to allow for smooth conclusion of the governorship poll.”
In a related development, the chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has written a letter of appreciation to the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-General Maharazu Tsiga, commending him for the efforts of the members of the NYSC in the conduct of the elections.
The letter, personally signed by Jega, recalled the enormous contributions of the youth in making the 2011 general election a success.
Jega also condoled with the NYSC and families of the youth corpers who were killed by rioters in northern Nigeria following outbreak of protests by supporters of the presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Maj-General Muhammad Buhari.
Meanwhile, as the people of Imo State awaited INEC political tension was reported building up.
Already, security surveillance have been put in place as a combined team of soldiers, police, men of State Security Service (SSS) and other paramilitary personnel have been drafted to strategic places in Owerri.
Armoured cars and tanks have been rolled out in the metropolis and particularly at INEC state office.
