...

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, (JCC – Lagos) has lamented the spate of extra-judicial killing of students in recent times.

It said the actions of security operatives was becoming unbearable and may lead to further escalation of violence in Nigeria.

In a statement sent on Monday, NANS called on all Nigerian Students to join the protest against “the brutal killing of students by Armed Nigerian forces”.

The statement signed by Comrade Salau Adeyinka Fatimah, Public Relations Officer, NANS – JCC Lagos Axis regretted that in an era of democracy, lives of promising youth were wasted on a daily basis.

“Gun-trotting security agents usually shoot at protesting students merely carrying placards,” she said.

The spokesman went on to list recent incident where student were brutalized and also murdered in cold-blood.

“On the 17th of June 2013, three (3) students were shot dead by officers of the Nigeria Police on Monday at Micheal Otedola College of Primary Education in Lagos. Several others were brutally injured.

“On the 11th of June 2013, four (4) students were shot during a peaceful protest within the premises of University of Uyo, UNIUYO, over the introduction of a new “Fare regime”. The Police arrived at the scene and opened fire that claimed lives of the students.

“On the 12th of June 2013, a Police officer shot Ahmed Dayo, a National Diploma I (ND I) Accounting student of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin. The policeman, who probably is a school drop-out, has left Dayo with a broken bone on his left leg and a crushed tibia which has affected the flat surface of his right foot. Except a miracle and/or urgent medical surgery, one of the affected legs may be amputated.

“On the 20th of May 2013, two (2) students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) Ogun state were killed and several others were injured by the Nigeria police. The Police arrived at the entrance of the campus in Armoured tanks and shot sporadically at the students.

“On the 25th of February 2013, four (4) unarmed students of Nasarawa State University, NSUK, were brutally murdered by the Nigerian Army during a peaceful protest for lack of water and electricity on campus.

“On the 26th of May 2013, students of the Federal College of Marine and Fisheries Technology were attacked by armed Nigeria Naval officials in the school premises. Four (4) students were shot at, while about thirty (30) were injured.

“These are few cases of extra-judicial killings perpetrated by men of the Nigeria Police and the Military.

“It is pertinent to state that incidents like the afore-mentioned, occur daily in our tertiary institution campuses in several parts of the country,” the statement said

NANS appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan, saying that as a Father himself, he should come to their rescue by calling security agencies to order before Nigeria students are wiped out.

The union further demanded that all the officers, who fired bullets that killed their deceased colleagues “be prosecuted for crimes against humanity.”

It also demanded that any committee raised to probe the killings should have students as members for the purpose of transparency.

A 33-year-old administrator of the Lagos State University, LASU, Onipanu Annex, Lagos State, was recently charged before an Isolo Magistrate’s Court...

A 33-year-old administrator of the Lagos State University, LASU, Onipanu Annex, Lagos State, was recently charged before an Isolo Magistrate’s Court for stealing, after he allegedly bolted with students’ tuition fees.

The accused, Mr Olusesan Oduwole allegedly stole N5 million after printing his own receipts and collected fees from other students. According to information made available to DailyPost, Oduwole was employed as an administrator by the institution and was allocated some receipts to use to collect students’ tuition fees. Instead of doing so, he secretly printed his own receipts and was diverting some of the money to personal pocket.

This had been going on for a while, but unknown to him, the new receipts he was given were secretly marked. However when the management eventually discovered what Oduwole was doing, and he got wind that his game was up, he fled.

He was later arrested by the police at Area ‘D’ Mushin and allegedly owned up to the fraud. He said he committed the crime to raise money to solve his personal problems. Oduwole was handed over to the police.

He allegedly made confessional statement to the police and said that he did not divert up to N5 million. When he was arraigned, he pleaded not guilty. The presiding Magistrate, Mrs Kayode, granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum. He was remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri pending the perfection of his bail. The matter was adjourned to 20 June.

SCORE RANGE NO OF
1ST CHOICE CANDIDATES 160 and above – 60,238
180 and above – 36,507

2ND CHOICE CANDIDATES 160 and above – 27,106
180 and above – 15,937
200 and above – 6,023

TOTAL 160 and above – 87,344
180 and above – 52,444
200 and above – 19,459

From the above, we can
obviously see that a UTME cut-
off mark of 200 for the UNN
would mean that they would
conduct the 2013 screening
exercise for barely 19,000
candidates. That is very
UNLIKELY. There are strong
indications that the UTME cut-
off of UNN will be less than 200.
Candidates who made the
University of Nigeria either their
first choice or second choice
are, therefore, advised to begin
their preparations for the post-
UTME Screening examination so
as not to be taken unawares
when the official
announcement is made.

HELLO JAMBITES......

DO YOU KNOW jamb announced that a minimum of 150 cut-off marks for Colleges of Education, Polytechnics and other non-degree-awarding institutions, while universities (State, Private and Federal), will accept a minimum of 180 cut-off benchmark ??

DO YOU KNOW Out of the 1,735,720 candidates that registered for the jamb exams. Tertiary institutions declared that they could only admit 704,000 students out of more than 1,735,720 candidates who are qualified to be given admission for the 2013/2014 academic year having scored 200 and above ??

DO YOU KNOW over one million jambites wont be admitted this year ??

in Nigeria as we all know, everything is based on favouritism and not on luck.
This strategy is also applied before one acquires an admission into the university.
4 example, lets take a glance at that of last year.
Many of us scored above 250 in our jamb scores and still scored above 70 in our post ume scores but still didint attain admission into the university.
While many score below 180 in their jamb scores and below 50 in their post ume scores and still got admission into their score of choice.!!

This strategy i just mentioned above is very legal and it is even authorised by the V.C of the school, because they sign and approve the admission list before it is published.

Getting an admission is not only based on ones knowledge, but you also have to play your cards well.
What i just told you now is a genuine and authorised means of getting yourself admiitted into the university even with low grades in your jamb and post ume scores..........

Institution Admission Slots Reduced To 704,000
Out of the 1,735,720 candidates that registered for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation...

Institution Admission Slots Reduced To 704,000
Out of the 1,735,720 candidates that registered for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, 1,540,179 candidates had their results released as 738,375 candidates have already crossed the 200 marks bar, even as the results of the 36,000 candidates that wrote computer-based tests have not been made public.

Tertiary institutions across the country, yesterday, declared that they could only admit 704,000 students out of more than 740,000 candidates who are qualified to be given admission for the 2013/2014 academic year having scored 200 and above.
This came as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, and National Universities Commission, NUC, vowed to vet post-matriculation admissions.

The institutions also debated the cut-off mark for this year’s admission after a rowdy argument at the 4th Combined Policy Committee meeting held at NUC headquarters in Abuja.

Cut-off marks reviewed

They arrived at 180 for degree-awarding institutions, while the cut-off mark for non-degree awarding institutions was pegged at 150 from 160 to encourage candidates to opt for polytechnics and colleges of education.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, made the disclosures, yesterday, at the NUC headquarters, stressing that the admission capacity of tertiary institutions in the country had been raised to 704,000, from the initial 500,000.

Ojerinde said the board and NUC had to deal with the problem of admission of excess students for which the Federal Government was often pushed into a tight corner.

Admission deadline

He warned the institutions to stick to the deadline of October 31 for admission of students and cautioned that any student admitted outside the deadline would not graduate from the institutions.

He said: “I wish to remind you formally that all admissions will come to an end by October 31. All institutions are hereby called upon to adhere strictly to this date as late submissions will not be entertained.

“We have discovered that some universities and other institutions comply with admission deadline, while some others do not comply and up till date they are still admitting students.”

He said that the scores of 180 and 160 were adopted last year as cut-off point, but was thrown open for institutions to agree on before adoption in the 2013/2014 year.

However, the debate on the cut-off for this year generated heated argument, but the institutions unanimously agreed to peg the cut-off mark at 180 for universities and 150 for non-degree awarding institutions.

Reasons for marks review

The institutions based their argument on the graph shown to them by JAMB, indicating that candidates preferred universities to polytechnics and colleges of education.

They argued that to encourage candidates to seek admissions in polytechnics and colleges of education, there was need to bring down the cut-off mark to 150 for non-degree awarding institutions.

Ojerinde reminded the institutions of the mandatory guidelines on admission, pegging criteria for merit at 45 percent, catchment, 35 and educationally less-developed states, ELDS, 20 for Federal Government-owned institutions.

For state-owned institutions, merit was put at 40 percent, catchment 40 and ELDS 20.

FG To Launch Fibre-Optic Education Network Connecting 27 Universities

The Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson, said that the Federal Government would launch its Fibre-optic Research and Education...

The Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson, said that the Federal Government would launch its Fibre-optic Research and Education Network, connecting 27 universities to the Internet by July.

Johnson announced the plan in Abuja on Tuesday at the ongoing Ministerial Platform when she presented the ministry’s achievements in the two years of the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.
She said the project currently being tested was part of the ministry’s initiative to make Nigerian students a priority in the development of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector.

She said that the project was in collaboration with Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission, Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) and World Bank STEP-B in the deployment of the education network to institutions.

“Next month we will launch that Fibre-optic Research and Education Network that is connecting 27 Federal universities to each other by the Internet.

“ The USPF supporting this project is expected to also connect 12 medical colleges, 28 off campus sites and nine federal universities by September 2013,” she said.

She said that more state universities, polytechnics and colleges of education were expected to be connected to the network by 2014 and 2015.

Johnson said the ministry had initiated another programme, called “Tertiary Institutions Access Project (TIAP)” under which desktop computers, printers, and wireless network facilities, among others, would be provided for tertiary institutions.

She said, “the ministry through its TIAP project had established connectivity in 17 universities and their teaching hospitals using fibre optics technology.

“Since the implementation of the programme, about 204 institutions have connected to it, with 74 institutions in 2012.

“We also have another programme, `School Access Project (SAP), providing classmate PCs, with e-learning content and accessories, solar power solutions, high speed Internet connectivity and wireless network deployment to government public schools

“This has been implemented in 605 schools between 2010 and 2012 with additional 218 schools in 2013

“All federal and state universities have now signed up for our Student Computer Ownership Scheme that allows students to purchase laptops using a low interest facility with monthly repayment plan of between N3,500 and N5,800,’’ she said.

Johnson, who decried low rate of adoption of ICTs by Nigerians, added that 0.9 per cent of households owned a PC, 3.6 per cent had access to one and 3.1 per cent accessed the Internet.

“An unacceptably high number of Nigerians are excluded from infrastructure that can meet their basic needs,’’ the minister said.

She said that increasing the spread of ICTs, particularly through mobile phones, could be a means through which this could be corrected.

She noted that the ministry was extending communications infrastructure to un-served and under-served areas through the Accelerated Mobile Phone Expansion (AMPE-BTS) programme that was helping to deploy Base Stations in rural areas.

“A total of 54 base stations has been installed while additional 28 are planned for 2013.

“We also have Rural Broadband Initiative (RUBI) that provides wholesale Internet bandwidth to ISPs, Cyber cafes, and ICT centres like Community Communication Centres (CCC) in rural communities.

“Of the 18 pilot sites selected, 12 are 95 per cent completed and transmission testing is currently ongoing in Akure and Osogbo,’’ she added.

Johnson said that the ministry was working to ensure that Nigerians had access to Internet at affordable prices, irrespective of their economic background.

She noted that with the intervention of the ministry, the number of base stations in Nigeria had increased exponentially since the inception of GSM service from 116 in 2001 to about 21,000 by 2010.

“The pace of growth has, however, slowed even as some existing base stations have been decommissioned as a result of terror attacks, theft and vandals.

“About 150 base stations were lost in 2012 due to bombings and flooding; twice as many dependent base stations were also affected,’’ she said.

Johnson said the numbers of base stations in the country was expected to rise from the current 27,000 to 65,000 in 2018 to meet the national target of a five-fold increase in broadband penetration by 2018.

he Cross River Government on Monday disbursed N15 Million as scholarship to 14 students, who are members of the state Children`s Parliament.

Presenting cheques to the beneficiaries, Mr Ebri Eteng, the Acting Executive Secretary of the state Scholarship Board, said that the award was the first phase of the programme.

Eteng said the state would continue to promote competition and encourage excellence through such awards to the best students.

He said that the scholarship would run through the duration of the beneficiaries’ university education from 2013 to 2017.

Eteng said the gesture would encourage more students to be creative and hard working in their studies.

He said that the second phase of the disbursement would commence as soon as funds were released by the government.

One of the beneficiaries, Peter Agbor, expressed happiness over the award and thanked the state government for the gesture.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Gov. Liyel Imoke had promised members of the Children`s Parliament scholarships during the celebration of the Day of the African Child in 2009.

We however, learnt that the delay in the take-off of the scholarship scheme was caused by the inability of many of the students to gain university admission.

Olabisi Onabanjo University Students Protest Over Hike Tuition Fees

Students of Ogun State-owned Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, under the aegis of Concerned Students of Olabisi Onabanjo...

Students of Ogun State-owned Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, under the aegis of Concerned Students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, have protested the decision of the Governor Ibikunle Amosun led-administration to increase the tuition fees of the institution.

The protesting students who said that, while state governors like Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom and Rochas Okorocha of Imo, have taken a cue from Chief Obafemi Awolowo, by providing free education up to secondary level and reducing University tuition fee to an average of N15, 000, “governor Amosun of Ogun state where Chief Awolowo hails from has failed in this regard but has rather raised the fees on assumption of office to a whooping N270, 000 [two hundred and seventy thousand naira] per student.”

Protesting that the increased fee would make some of them drop out of school, the students asked Amosun to ensure his electoral promises in the build-up to the 2011 gubernatorial elections.

He was quoted as saying that there would be “at least a fifty [50] per cent reduction” in the tuition fees of OOU.

Full text of the statement:

PRESS RELEASE: AMOSUN’S BREACH OF SOCIAL CONTRACT WITH OOU STUDENTS

As concerned students of the above named university, we are compelled to bring to the notice of the general public and all stakeholders the breach of the social contract by the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun which he entered into with students in Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU with the promise of at least a fifty [50] per cent reduction in the tuition fees as part of his electoral promises in the build-up to the 2011 gubernatorial elections.

While other state governors like Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom state and Rochas Okorocha of Imo state have followed in the footsteps of Chief Obafemi Awolowo by keeping to their electoral promises and have provided free education up to secondary level, while the University level enjoys very low tuition of an average of N15, 000, governor Amosun of Ogun state where Chief Awolowo hails from has failed in this regard but has rather raised the fees on assumption of office to a whooping N270, 000 [two hundred and seventy thousand naira] per student.

In Akwa Ibom and Imo states, the governors have even gone a few notches higher in their promises on education by awarding scholarships to indigent students, payment of bursary to students of higher education, development of facilities in state-owned institutions, prompt release of funds to institutions of higher learning, sponsorship of students to Ivy league schools abroad and donation of new academic lecture halls to schools even outside its ownership among others.

Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State on the other hand has not paid bursary to students in Ogun state since assumption of office, has made zero allocation to tertiary institutions in the state, little or no infrastructure has been developed in OOU, rather he has chosen to inflict more burden on the students and their parents by extorting more money from them through exorbitant school fees.

Although, the governor has made seeming concessions on the OOU crisis by authorizing the re-opening of the school portal from, 3rd-11th June, 2013 for all students to make payment of their school fees and update their records, failure which they will have to take a leave of absence if they are only able to pay up to 2011/2012 session but cannot pay up to the current 2012/2013 academic session.

It also insisted that those who are unable to pay up to last session may either be asked to drop-out of the institution or repeat the sessions they owe, this was not what we bargained for at the polls, hence it is totally unacceptable.

But the governor must consider the fact the tuition fees in the OOU has already reached a whooping N270, 000 per session for each student in major disciplines like Engineering, Law, Medicine while courses in the Faculty of Art, Social Sciences etc. averages N210, 000 per session, this is outrageous for a state-owned university where the governor is promising free-education at all levels.

Let us take a scenario where some of the students in the Ogun state-owned university are now owing up to three [3] academic sessions, which amounts to N810, 000 [eight hundred and ten thousand naira] per student at an average of N270, 000 [two hundred and seventy thousand] per session.

How does the Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun expect such a student to raise the funds within the limited time frame it is allocating to the students?

Some families are even known to have about two [2] students in the same institution and this will bring their fees to paying a whooping N1, 620,000 [one million, six hundred and twenty thousand naira] for three sessions.

Where will parents get such money from in just a week or two when some of them have already sold their only farm land to pay part of the fees in previous sessions due to the harsh economic realities evidenced by the growing unemployment rate and declining productivity in the country caused by more industries closing down?

So what will be the fate of families with about three [3] to four [4] children in the same school? The answer can best be imagined than experienced.

Even in the Ogun State Civil Service; a Director-General of any Ministry, Department or Agency who can be regard as the highest paid worker on the state’s pay roll cannot cough out such huge funds required to liquidate the outstanding tuition fees in Olabisi Onabanjo University within the one week grace period for payment by the institution, let alone ordinary farmers and artisans predominant in the state’s agrarian economy.

What the government has failed to realize is that, the majority of students in the institution are either from poor families and have to be on the streets of major cities like Lagos, Abuja, Port-Harcourt and Ibadan hawking and hustling to sponsor themselves to obtain this now “Highly Priced Education” in OOU, at a cost that has now earned the university the status of the “Most Expensive State University in Nigeria”, even when its facilities and academic standards cannot even compete with some of its Privately owned counterparts in the country who are known to charge such outrageous tuition fees.

Also, we want to state that students who complied with the directive by the school management that they obtain a certificate from their heads of department indicating their current level, to serve as a confirmation of their studentship and submit same to the Information Technology Center for the update of their profiles before payment can be made are yet to have their profiles updated till date which if the policy is implemented as it is will be barred from paying for the sessions they are able to source funds for and automatically from the examinations.

It is therefore imperative that the payment portal be opened beyond the deadline to enable students who may have their fees ready to pay their outstanding fees and update their records, while those who are unable to raise the required funds be allowed to write the first semester examinations and allowed to pay during the second semester.

Also, arbitrary components in the tuition fees like Departmental levy of N1, 000 [one thousand naira] which students are now paying twice should be abolished as they are already paying same at their departments.

In the same vein, the N15, 000 [fifteen thousand naira] ICT levy should be abolished as it amounts to fraud for the school to still obtain money from students under the same heading when Exxon Mobil, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation [NNPC] and its Joint-Venture partners have already built, equipped and donated an Ultra-Modern ICT Center to the institution.

The center is already being put to use by the University’s ICT department for the General Studies [GNS] Examinations it conducted in the first bath of the examinations which it used in piloting the computer based model of examinations.

We appeal to the government to stay implementation on the “no school fees, no examination” policy which it is currently pushing for in the institution as the government has also failed in its own contract by failing to reduce the school fees since its assumption of office on May, 29, 2011.

The present economic realities in the country has even complicated matters for families as they are unable to meet up with responsibilities as and when due, hence the implementation of the policy is ill-timed and will only pose a greater danger to the society.

Failure to suspend the implementation of this policy under the present situation will only bring about negative implications for the institution, state and the nation at large as its ripple effect will be the increase in the number of students who will be forced to drop out of the university out of frustration, some of them in their final year who have already spent over six years in the school for courses whose duration is four years owing to the inconsistent academic calendar in the school in the past.

To this end, we hereby demand that the governor should keep to his social contract by bringing about a drastic reduction in the tuition fees in the university to a maximum of N90, 000 per student for Faculties of Engineering, Law and Medicine which currently pay the highest fees in the institution while other faculties should not pay more than N60, 000.

Pending the implementation of this contract, we hereby demand the immediate suspension of the “no school fees, no examination” policy and that all students should be allowed to write the second round of the harmattan semester examinations scheduled to begin on the 24th June, 2013.

We are aware that officials of the Student’s Union Government [SUG] of the university have been brutalized by security operatives on the orders of the state and offered some level of compensation to withdraw from leading further protests on the subject, which is now evident in their total silence on the issue as no member of the OOU, SUG leadership has offered any statement on the way forward on the crisis.

Finally, we demand that the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun as the Visitor to the University should keep to his social contract by directing that all school fees in the university be reduced by at least 50 per cent as he had promised during the 2011 electoral campaigns he made to the students of the university as well as other tertiary institutions owned by the state, with this he will not have to pressurize students with deadlines before they pay as it will be more affordable for them to pay on schedule.

The federal government has absolved itself of any blame for the poor performance of students in general examinations, claiming it is the state governors that are not doing enough.

The Minister of Education, Ruquayattu Rufai, absolved the federal government during the presentations of the ministry’s scorecards of in Abuja, where she shifted the blame to state governments who she accused of not doing enough to address the falling standard of education.

According to her, one of the steps taken by the present administration to address the annual falling standard is the establishment of Almajiri schools in the northern part of the country.

The Minister of state for Education, Nyesom Wike, said 80 out of the 125 Almajiri schools promised by the federal government have been completed.

The Ministers at this forum insisted that the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan is fulfilling its role in reforming the education sector.

They however call on state governments to support the federal government to achieve more results.
