Traditional journalism and online journalism

  1. Gago
As we all know,we started from somewhere and we will end up somewhere.Just like humans from conception to birth, from weaning to childhood, from childhood to adulthood and from adulthood to old age and to final destination which is death. The future of traditional journalism is already known in most of the developed countries where online journalism is in control of the mainstream media industry. This is because, the world is fast becoming smaller as far as information is concern which experts refered to as "GLOBAL VILLAGE" and this is only possible through the use of modern media such as computers, satellite, high speed internet service and many other technologies. Before the coming of new media, information move slow between people and community but with online journalism all that become a thing of the past.Information travel faster than expected across communites, nations and boundaries without any censoreship. In Nigeria, the story is quite different in the sense that traditional journalism is in control of the media industry even though there is a growing use of online journalism to some extent but yet it is not as rampant as the developed countries. This is due to some factors which are yet to be tackled such as illiteracy, poverty, power shortage and bad leadership.A lot of Nigerians lived in rural areas and there is a widening gap between the rural areas and the urban areas which makes access to new media even more difficult and left them with government controlled media.Even in the urban areas not the inhabitants are use to the new media but the usage and appreciation of the new media is growing very fast especially the mobile phone network otherwise known as "GSM" which provide faster networks including broadband network.A few of local newspapers have websites and some of them don't even care to update the site with latest news as it comes in like their counterparts in developed countries which shows how the traditional journalism still prevail for now. With the type of leadership we have in Nigeria,we are far from the the type of online journalism in europe and America because the government is not given access to information and easily manhandled any media outlet that report what the government don't like to be reported but with the few websites available some information that are not available on the mainstream media can easily be found in those website which makes it more difficult for the government to detect the source. In a nutshell the future of traditional journalism can be said to a matter of time before online journalism become takesover.Because online journalism offers more information, education, entertainment and enlightenment than the traditional journalism and it can be access everywhere in the planet without any constraint except where there is tight government control on information and other related issues.
