Nigeria has evacuated 1,069 of its citizens from Egypt after days of protests against the rule of Hosni Mubarak, president of the North African country, a government agency said today.
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan ordered the evacuations after many Nigerians were stranded at the Cairo Airport, the National Emergency Management Agency said today in an e-mailed statement. Those evacuated included the elderly and infirm, as well as seven infants, the agency said.
As many as 300 people have died in Egypt since clashes started Jan. 25, according to the United Nations.
