The National University Commission (NUC) in collaboration with security agencies have met with the aim to resolve the crisis that has been lingering amongst the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) as directed by the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’i .
The meeting which was held recently in Abuja provided an avenue for a constructive engagement by all stakeholders and the different factions of NANS to resolve the problems that have been causing disharmony among the student body to achieve a unified leadership for the students in the Nigerian university system.
The stakeholders resolved that there was need to review the existing constitution and conduct a fresh election to produce a new national executive for the body.
After consultations with the representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education and the security agencies, the chair person at the meeting, Prof. Ignatius Uvah read the ultimatum by the Federal Government which directed that all factions be dissolved.
Prof. Uvah said the security agencies would be formally directed to deal with any student found parading himself as the president of NANS until a fresh poll is conducted.
He made it known that the commission would provide every necessary environment and direction for the students to review the NANS constitution within 30 days and conduct elections for its leadership thereafter.
On his part, Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Julius Okojie advised the students to go back to the drawing board and resolve their problems.
Those present at the meeting were the representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education, National Secretary Adviser, Nigerian Police Force, State Security Services (SSS) Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), NUC’s Department of Student Support Services and Legal Services Division.
