Mr. Reuben Mouka, Head of the Media for the Nigerian Communication Commission has confirmed that mobile phone users who failed to register their SIM cards today, the deadline for all registrations, may soon lose use of it indefinitely.
The registration, the commission says, is a national obligation and henceforth no subscriber would be allowed to use any mobile network without registering the SIM card.
The official registration of SIMs commenced in 2010, and all SIM cards activiated post registration law, had to be registered in order to be activated. However, SIMs active before registration was required were still in use.
With the deadline upon us, many Nigerians have heeded the call to register their SIM cards, but some were just hitting registration points today.
In a press statement from the NCC, the commission stated that it was commencing the collation and harmonisation of data from all network operators and would give an opportunity to persons yet to register their SIMs a limited grace period to do so.
All unregistered SIM cards, the statement noted, would be promptly disconnected at the conclusion of the harmonisation process.
Registration agents, today, told Channels Television that the process has been daunting and long winding.
However, more challenging than registering clamouring cell phone users, was the problem of multiple registration encountered by some subscribers, which many found frustrating.
Mr. Mouka said he regretted the problem and said that registered users faced with this problem should be rest assured that there will be no problems at the end of the process.
