As part of solutions to the lingering crises that have been ravaging Jos and other parts of the country, the Federal Government has been urged to convene a Sovereign National Conference [SNC] after the 2011 general elections.
Representatives of the Yoruba Unity Forum [YUF] made the call while on a two day visit to the Plateau State Capital.
While addressing newsmen in Jos, the leader of the delegation of the forum to Plateau State, Senator Suleiman Salawu, said in spite of the parliament in place, there was the need for such a conference involving all the federating ethnic groups in Nigeria to have a sense of belonging in determining the future of the country.
The forum believes the proposed conference will give all federating ethnic groups in the country the opportunity to address the interests of minorities among other issues.
According to him, the crises in Nigeria were as a result of the recycling of North and South, Christian and Muslim dichotomy, while the 1999 Constitution awkwardly was tailored without regards to the interest of minority tribes in various location and states of Nigeria.
Senator Salawu, who said the Yorubas residing in Jos lost property worth billions of naira to the crises, called on the Federal Government and it Plateau State government to release the sum of N100 billion as compensation to the people to ameliorate the hardship they were passing through as a result of the upheavals.
The leader of the delegation further pointed out the causes of the crises could be traced to a faction of Hausa/Fulani settlers and the indigenous population of Plateau both capitalising and employing religious differences as excuse.
