The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) yesterday denied reports that the Super Eagles team to the ongoing 2010 World Cup in South Africa has been disbanded, after crashing out of the global soccer fiesta in the first round.
The Committee gave the clarification after its meeting in Abuja to review the country's participation in the first-ever World Cup to be staged on the African soil.
Also yesterday, the football governing body tendered unreserved apology to President Goodluck Jonathan, the Federal Government of Nigeria and all football loving Nigerians for the early exit of the Super Eagles from the 2010 World Cup.
First Vice President of the Federation Amanze Uchegbulam, who spoke to reporters after the meeting held at the NFF secretariat in Abuja, also commended the immense support given to the team by President Jonathan and other well-meaning Nigerians.
Uchegbulam, who praised the impact of Technical Adviser Lars Lagerback on the team, also informed that Coach Austin Eguavoen will take charge of the Super Eagles, as Lagerback continues his two-week leave in Sweden.
He announced the scrapping of the Home-based Eagles, saying "henceforth, there will be only one Super Eagles, with no foreign-based or home-based appellations".
He added that in the determination to rebuild the national team from the perspective of recent experiences, the World Cup coaching crew has been mandated to embark on a highly rigorous technical process of raising a new team to be dominated by the youth and home-grown talent.
According to him, the crew is to develop a long-term and sustained training programme that will give the new team adequate exposure and confidence ahead of imminent qualifying competitions.
Finally, he said the NFF Executive Committee has upheld the verdict of the Arbitration Tribunal set up to determine the NPL election issue, which nullified the election of Davidson Owumi as the NPL Chairman and directed the NPL to comply with the verdict.
