Nigeria’s female national team, Super Falcons, defeated Equatorial Guinea 4-2 in the final game of the 7th African Women’s Championships (AWC) on Sunday in South Africa.
Falcons met Equitorial Guinea amidst fears of suspected fielding of male players in the Guinea team which spanked host, South Africa 3-1 in the semi-final.
In a performance full of guile, invention, improvization and silky skills, the Falcons overpowered the Camerounians to become the first side through to Sunday’s final.
The Falcons was ahead by 1-0 in the first half of the final game and emerged victorious at the final whistle by 4-2.
"We are pleased with our performance. We made very little mistakes but in the end it was a very good performance. The most important thing is that we have lifted the Cup," Coach Eucharia Uche said after the match.
Nigeria pledged to reclaim the African title.
For the Super Falcons, it is a sweet revenge to the Equatorial Guinean girls who eliminated them in the semi-finals of the 2008 championship hosted by Equatorial Guinea.
The Super Falcons maintained a clean slate all through the championship, losing no match, conceding only 4 goals and scoring 19 goals.
The two sides have qualified for the FIFA World Women Cup in Germany in 2011.
