Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have sensationally dropped skipper Fortune Chukwudi ahead of next month’s African Youth Championship in Libya.

Chukwudi could not produce his passport, which he said is at an embassy and as such I have no choice but to leave without him,” Flying Eagles coach, John Obuh, informed MTNFootball.com

The solid tackling central defender was one of the stars as Nigeria reached the final of the 2009 FIFA Under-17 World Cup on home soil.

The skipper’s armband has now been handed to midfielder Ramon Azeez, one of 25 players named for a final training camp in Turkey. Azeez, who will join the team in Antalya, will now be assisted by goalkeeper D

Championship in Libya next month.

A final squad will then be named on the eve of the tournament.

The team will engage AYC hosts Libya in a two –match challenge on Monday and Wednesday, before they fly out for a training tour camp in Antalya, Turkey.


The contingent of 25 players and nine officials will arrive in Turkey on February 17, where they will be joined by four foreign-based players.

The team will spend 25 days and play a number of friendly matches in Antalya, before jetting back to Tripoli on March 14 for the continental showpiece.

Nigeria are drawn against reigning world champions Ghana, Cameroon and Gambia in Group B of the African Youth Championship which takes place in Libya March 18 – April 1.

The Flying Eagles opening match of the tournament is against the reigning world champions Ghana, before games against Cameroon in Benghazi and The Gambia in Tripoli.
