The Kano State National and State Assembly Election Petition Tribunal has nullified the election of a member of the Federal House of representatives, Honourable Surajo Harisu of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), representing Dambatta/Makoda Federal Constituency of Kano State.
The Tribunal also declared Alhaji Badamasi Ayuba of the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) winner of the April 9, 2011 House of Representatives election, on grounds that he scored the highest number of lawful votes cast in the election.
In a 45 minute judgment delivered by the Chairman of the Kano State National and State Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal, Justice Muhktar Ladipo Abimbola, the Tribunal stated that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) wrongfully rejected the valid votes cast for the petitioner.
The Tribunal however upheld the election of another Federal Lawmaker, Honourable Muhammed Bashir Galadanchi of the PDP and dismissed the petition, challenging the election of the former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Honourable Abdul’Aziz Garba Gafasa.
Meanwhile, the petition filed by Alhaji Jibril Barau of the ANPP, challenging the election of Senator Hayatu Bello Gwarzo, representing Kano North Senatorial District would be decided on October 13, 2011.
