he Peoples Democratic Party may have commenced subtle moves to reduce the influence of its governors on the party nationwide by reducing the number of delegates alloted to them at the party’s conventions.
The PDP National Chairman, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, who gave the hint on Wednesday in Abuja, said that it was wrong to allow governors to attend party conventions with their political appointees.
Nwodo spoke when he received members of the Delta State Elders and Stakeholders Forum led by a former Minister of Information, Chief Edwin Clark.
He added that the development had, conferred undue advantage on the governors over other aspirants, adding that any political appointee who believed that he was popular should seek the support of members of his or her ward in a primary election.
Nwodo said this was part of the ongoing reform in the party, which he, however, added would become effective upon the amendment of the party’s constitution.
Speaking on the state of the nation, Nwodo said, “We have wasted 50 years on military rule and imposed leadership. The day we start to allow our people to choose our leaders, Nigeria will change.
“We are going to bring a lot of electoral reform to the PDP because our primary elections are decided before we get to the congress.”
According to Nwodo, “When a governor comes to an election with all their commissioners, with all their special advisers, with unelected chairmen and appointed councillors, he is already controlling 70 per cent of the delegates.
“So, if he says they that he will be there, even for a third term, he has people who will vote for him.
“The rest of the many governorship aspirants will be struggling for the 30 per cent, whereas one man has 70 per cent before you open your mouth. Is that a contest? Will that allow the best man to emerge?
“We have to change this constitution. We have to make sure that all these appointees cannot be delegates to our conventions.”
