President Goodluck Jonathan supporters have dismissed speculations that state governors are stumbling blocks to his ambition to seek a re-election in next year's general elections.

The Senior Special Adviser to the President, Senator Abba Aji, allayed the fears of the supporters, and maintained that the state governors are not a threat to the president's ambition to contest in the 2011 general elections.

The President's aide told reporters in Abuja that President Jonathan will officially announce his intention to contest in next year's presidential election in the next two weeks.

The occasion also served an avenue and another chance for another group, named Members and Friends of Democracy (MFD) to show their support for the President Jonathan ahead of the 2011 general elections. Members of MFD who are past ministers, serving and former members of the National Assembly and politicians were all present.

The leaders of the group said the president will declare his intention to contest very soon. They also said they have nothing to fear from state governors.

Members include Cairo Oju, Senator Ibrahim Mantu, Honorable Albert Atiwurcha and Ken Okolugbo. They expressed their unflinching support for the president's ambition next year. Other members of the group who were present at the parley with the pressmen urged Nigerians to disregard insinuations that the President will not contest. They said the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former President Ibrahim Babangida was good for the polity. They however highlighted that their running for the presidency slot in 2011 along with the president is nothing to worry about. The group led by Cairo Oju, Senator Ibrahim Mantu, as Director-General and member of friends of democracy respectively stressed that the declaration by President Jonathan will bring an end to months of rumors and insinuations over whether he will contest and what it will mean for the elections.
