ALTHOUGH it currently holds sway in Anambra State, the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) has listed Abia, Imo, and Adamawa states, where it will give other parties a good fight in the 2011 elections.
It welcomes the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC’s) request for more time to conduct credible elections next year.
According to APGA Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh, the party has perfected plans to capture Imo and Abia states in the South-East, and possibly in Adamawa State.
Umeh told The Guardian in Abuja that the level of development in Anambra State, the only state, which it currently controls, has proven to the people of the zone that the party has what it takes to deliver the dividends of democracy to them.
He said since INEC has resolved to conduct free, fair and transparent elections in 2011, the party is in a position to win in most of the states, including those outside the South-East.
“APGA has revolutionised political activities especially in the South-East where we have our stronghold and I want to tell you that most Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members are already discussing with us, all along we have not been intimidated or cowed by anybody because we hold strongly to the principles of democracy.”
The APGA chief said the party’s flagbearer in the Imo State governorship contest in 2007, Martin Agbaso, enjoys tremendous goodwill from the people, who are eager to see him occupy the Government House in 2011.
Apart from the South East, Umeh said the party is making inroads in other parts of the country with “a respected don, Prof. Joel Patrick Dada of the University of Maiduguri going to run as our governorship candidate in Adamawa State.”
Umeh also displayed a letter from INEC recognising his faction for the 2011 elections.
He said the INEC’s letter followed a series of letters, which it received from Chekwas Okorie, urging it to continue to address him as the APGA boss.
In the said letter, written by INEC Secretary, Abdulahi Kaugama and copied to Okorie, the commission said: “After a comprehensive review of issues relating to the leadership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), I am directed to inform you that the commission will resume full formal relationship with the All Progressives Grand Alliance leadership as established by the courts.”
Consequently, INEC said it would continue to relate with the APGA under the leadership of Umeh as national chairman and Alhaji Sani Shinkafi as national secretary.
