FORMER Minister of Finance, Alh. Adamu Ciroma, and his Northern Political Leaders Forum have been warned to desist from undermining the unity of the country with provocative and divisive comments on national issues.
The warning came on the heel of advice to security agencies not to spare provocateurs, specifically those behind the Anniversary Day bombing in Abuja.
The Northern Political Summit otherwise known as G20 yesterday unequivocally condemned the call by Ciroma and his group on President Goodluck Jonathan, to resign or be impeached over the Abuja bomb attack.
The Northern Political Summit comprises former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Soloman Lar, Ambassador Hassan Adamu, Amb. Shehu Malami, Prof. Jerry Gana, Alh. Bamanga Tukur, Chief Barnabas Gemade, Senator Ibrahim Ida, Sen. Bala Mohammed, Prince Abubakar Audu, Dr. Rabiu Kwankaso, Malam Maina Waziri, Engr. Mohammed Abbba Gana, former Adamawa State governor, Boni Haruna.
Others include Prof. Saad Abubakar, Col. Bala Mande, Chief Mrs. Magaret Icheen, Chief Mrs. Salome Jakanda, Dr. Christie Silas Maj. Gen Zamini Lekwot, Paul Unongo, Alhaji Ali Umar and Chief Bayo Ojo among several others.
Alh. Buahri Bala, Secretary of the group said in a statement that given the serious nature of these tragic events, "We denounce, in strong terms, attempts being made by some political leaders to politicize this matter.”
Noting that most Nigerians are also outraged by the new language of threats and unwarranted intimidations and ultimatums coming from leaders of Northern Political Forum.
The group further said, “This is outrageous in the extreme. Matters of national security should not be politicized, for whatever reasons.”
The statesmen and women opined that leaders should do their best to find lasting solutions to national problems instead of the deliberate attempts being made to provoke further confusion and crisis.
“In honour of the innocent Nigerians who sadly lost their lives in the tragic bomb blasts, we have resolved to raise this appeal for peace, social harmony and patient.
"Understanding has become necessary because of certain provocative statements that have tended to escalate the already tense situation in our dear country”, it stressed.
While appealing for calm, the group said, “As patriotic citizens, we must conduct our public affairs on the high plane of dignity, discipline and decorum. Surely, it is far better to work together to move Nigeria away from the quicksand of ethnic and regional politics to the solid rock of national integration based on justice, social harmony and national security.
“People should no attempt to get anything or seek redress illegally or from outside of due process because in a democracy, it is through the ballot that people got elected and not through undemocratic process of incitements, dubious means and unfounded impeachment threats.
Besides, the group urged President Jonathan to continue to be patient being the father of the nation and “avoid the temptations of reacting to provocative statements from political opponents.”
