he National Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) Chief Ogbonnaya Onu has criticized the existence of what he called the drift towards a one party system in Nigeria.
Chief Onu told Channels Television in Kaduna State that there is the need for a change from the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] that has ruled the country for over twelve years.
He urged Nigerians to give other political parties in the country a chance to prove their worth at both the state and national level in the coming 2011 general election.
Chief Onu also canvassed for a free and fair election in the coming general election so that Nigerians can vote in who they truly want.
Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, had earlier called on the National Assembly to approve that elections into various positions in the 2011 general elections be held the same day.
"We want all elections to be held on the same day because if that is done, those who want to trigger a bandwagon effect will fail because we want the will of the Nigerian people to prevail.
"We want those who are elected to be those who are the choices of the people and we believe that holding elections on the same day is very important for Nigeria," he said.
Onu said apart from guaranteeing the election of credible and selfless leaders, the practice was cheap and would save money for INEC and the political parties since the exercise would last one day instead of three days.
He called on ANPP supporters in the state to troop out en-masse and register as voters by January, next year, when the registration would start to ensure that the party won the April elections.
Onu commended members of the party for their perseverance, saying: "it is not easy to be in a party that is in the opposition in a developing country."
He called on former ANPP party members in the state, who defected to other parties, to return, saying: "Tell them that the rooms they left behind are still available for them."
Addressing a large crowd at the Lokoja Township Stadium to welcome the National Chairman, the North Central Leader of the party, Abubakar Audu, said the party was poised to recapture the state.
The Kogi Chairman of the party, Mr. Farouk Yahaya, said the party had entrenched internal democracy while national image had improved.
