The governor of Niger State, Dr Muazu Aliyu has said that the insistence of the National Assembly members to be members of the National Executive Committees [NEC] of their parties despite the huge protest across the country is a threat to the nation's democracy.

The governor while speaking when a coalition of seventeen political parties adopted him as their sole candidate for the governorship race in Niger State said the action of the National Assembly members is selfish and aimed at returning them to the National Assembly.

Dr Aliyu appealed to the people to safeguard the nation's hard won democracy by resisting what he described as an unpatriotic act of the lawmakers.

If the bill sails through, all the 270 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members of the House of Representatives and all the 88 PDP senators will automatically become members of the party's NEC.

For the PDP, this will effectively change the configuration of the NEC and make the lawmakers the largest bloc in the NEC.
