A presidential aspirant and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will today know whether he is eligible to appear before the screening and clearance committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or not.

Justice Ishaq Bello of the Abuja High Court yesterday adjourned ruling in an application for a motion for interlocutory injunction stopping Atiku from appearing before the committee.

Sen. Abdullahi Kirim and Dr Bala Takaya of the PDP had, through their counsel, Chief Chukwuma Obumneme (SAN) asked the court to restrain Atiku from appearing before the screening committee. The duo also asked the court to compel the PDP not to screen Atiku.

The plaintiff alleged that Atiku, who was an official of the Nigeria Customs Service between 1969 and 1989, where he rose to become a deputy director, was dismissed following the findings of a panel of inquiry that recommended his dismissal.

The plaintiffs are also asking the court to invoke its jurisdiction to stop Atiku, saying that both the PDP and the 1999 Nigerian Constitutions prohibited people of questionable character from vying for any elective office in the country.

They also asked the court to specifically take into cognisance the fact that Atiku was allegedly indicted by the U.S. Senate in a $40 million money laundering accusation.
