AS political parties and candidates step up their campaigns ahead of the April elections, Speaker of the House of Represen-tatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, has called on all politicians vying for elective positions to avoid making unrealistic campaign promises to win votes.
Speaking in Abuja yesterday as the Special Guest of Honour at the Fifth Public Lecture of Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria at the National Mosque, he urged politicians not to unduly raise the hope of the electorate by making promises they cannot fulfil.
He noted that there is now a rising level of sophistication among the electorate which will not allow them to be taken in with sweet promises.
The speaker also counselled the electorate not to make impossible demands on the politicians during the campaigns, as this is what usually leads some politicians to make outlandish promises they cannot fulfil.
