Abuja, Nigeria - Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday in Abuja ended his nation-wide electioneering campaign with a pledge to create 1.5 million jobs in the next two years. The president said that the 1.5 million jobs would be created through public works. He said if his mandate was renewed on 9 April, 2011, he would build a nation that would be the pride of generations to come. According to him, “I pledge my personal commitment to lifting Nigeria and its citizens.” On political violence, President Jonathan said that “neither my ambition, nor the the ambition of any Nigerian is worth the blood of any Nigeria.”
Stating that “we are going to adopt modern technology in protecting the lives and property of the citizens”, the president said he repudiated all forms of political violence.
He therefore announced that “there will be no sanctuary for any violent act in Nigeria. If you get involved, be ready to face the law.”
He also pledged to apply strictly the rule of law in all spheres, insisting that “we are determined to fight corruption regardless of the position of the person involved.”
President Jonathan acknowledged that his opponents had done a good job, reminding Nigerians of the problems confronting the nation but said that “their solution are hopelessly inadequate and are mostly made up of models that have failed in the past and belong to the past.”
The President also said he would work assiduously to improve the nation’s infrastructure, education, agriculture and generally provide the environment for Nigeria to thrive.
