An election monitoring group, Project 2011 Swift Count, has appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure that proper logistics are put in place to guarantee the success of the April polls.
The group made this appeal in Abuja while reviewing preparations put in place for the election.
While commending the steps taken by the Federal Government to prevent political violence by barring politicians from the moving around on election day, the group said it hoped this will not hinder the efforts of accredited observers.
The group said the country can reverse the downward trend that has been observed in previous elections if authorities and political actors do their parts effectively.
"We note the recent decision to rotate state police commissioners to enhance confidence in the security forces. INEC should, as appropriate, take similar steps to ensure all INEC staff, in particular the RECs, are not compromised during the elections." the group said.
"In the interest of transparency and accountability, we again recommend that INEC not only announce aggregate results, but also provide results by individual polling unit in Abuja for the presidential election and in the state capitals for the gubernatorial elections. This would further enhance confidence in the accuracy of the official results."
The group said it is deploying 8,000 observers to a representative random sample of polling stations and will verify official results as announced by the INEC for the April elections.
