Default N10 Billion Madness ! - Yar'adua will not do this

It is a pity that at such a time when all nations are cutting cuts,Our insensible leaders are accumulating debts for us and our grand children.
How can any man in this world justify the N10 billion Naira budget for the 50th anniversary?.In the first instance ,is it necessary?.
This was what brought the good memory of Yar'adua back to my memory.Despite the circumstances sorrounding his death,One fact we couldn't take away from late president Yaradua is the fact that he was a really honest and prudent president.

We missed you dearly,to those left PLEASE STOP THIS NONSENSE.

True it is not necessary. Even if it is the tradition of nations to celebrate, spending such amount is usually hinged to such benefits as are known to accrue to the celebrant - more tourists and foreign investments. Yes, 'Yar Adua would not spend that much for nothing, for we have nothing to show any tourist or investor for the moment.

Default Govt denies increasing Golden Jubilee budget

The Federal Government yesterday denied that the proposed N10billion budget for the celebration of the nation's 50th Independence anniversary was jacked up from N62million by President Goodluck Jonathan. A paper reported yesterday that the N62million budget was initially approved by the late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua.

But the government said the N10billion, was proposed by the committee set up by the late president to celebrate the Golden Jubilee.

According to the Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, who briefed reporters yesterday, there was no single truth in the story as there was no initial budget for the celebration.

The said N62million, she pointed out, was specifically budgeted for the usual low key independence celebration and not for the Golden Jubilee celebration. The amount, she said, was for three ministries: Information, Police Affairs and Interior.

The minister added that there was no budget approved by the former president for the Golden Jubilee celebration.

Explaining the circumstances that led to the controversial N10billion budget, Mrs Akunyili said it was the late president who set up a committee headed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Alhaji Ahmed Yayale, to draw up a comprehensive Golden Jubilee anniversary celebration programme and appropriated budget for the celebration when he realised that there was no budget for it.

She also promised that a detailed breakdown of the budget as submitted by the committee would be released in due course.

Also yesterday, the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) expressed displeasure that Dr Jonathan’s administration is planning to spend about N10 billion to celebrate the nation’s independence anniversary.

ANPP, in a statement by the Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Emma Eneukwu, said proper attention should be given to power, which is the pillar of development in any society, adding that over the years, government has paid lip service to this particular sector which has helped in crippling the manufacturing sector and millions of small scale businesses.

Former Minister of Petroleum, Prof. Tam David-West, also criticised the N10 billion budgeted by the Federal Government.

David-West, who spoke in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital yesterday, described the budget as wasteful, saying it is a misnomer in a country where millions of jobless graduates are roaming the streets.

According to the Professor of Virology, the huge sum can fix part of the problems in the major sector such as power or education, adding that it can as well be used to revitalise the health sector.

He said: "Spending N10 billion on a mere celebration is completely out of place in a country that is itching to borrow more money to attend to ailing sectors of the economy. That could have done something to create job opportunities for many of our graduates who are roaming the streets, supply drugs to hospitals or even fix the education sector."

I also criticized Yar Adua's slowness in project implementation and the way his sickness was handled but that man would never have been a party to this wasteful venture, never!,He knew where it is biting us.

Spending 10 billion naira on 50 years celebration of achieving nothing then when we achieve something we will spend our lives. It is stupid and unthinkable that in a country where alot of things are yet to be put in place the govt is spending 10 billion naira.Where is power, what is the state of our education, what is the state of our health in this country, how many of our youngmen are gainfully employed. If this is true, then JONATHAN and his cabinet are ROGUES,THIEVES AND UNWORTHY OF THIS NATION. Nigerians should rise and shout because a man without good earnings at 50yrs will never have anything till he dies.

Default N16.4 billion not N10 billion budgeted for Nigeria @ 50 Celebrations!

Contrary to reports that the Federal Government presented a budget of ten billion naira (N10billion) for approval by the National Assembly for its Nigeria @ 50 celebrations, figures emerging from the National Assembly shows that the actual budget figure is in excess of N16 billion (precisely N16,372,217, 977). An analysis by the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), of the Supplementary Appropriation Bill 2010, submitted by the
Executive and published in the National Assembly Journal of 24 June 2010, shows that allocations were made under various heads that add up to the said figure of N16.37 billion.

Civil Society Organisations, opposition parties and legislators, even from the ruling PDP have criticised what is considered to be an exceedingly wasteful budget for the Nigeria @ 50 celebrations.

Under the budget proposal, the office of the Secretary of the Federation will spend N6.396 billion (precisely N6, 396,700,000) on among several items the following:

    (a) Website design/hosting - N6 million

    (b) Anniversary Logo- N30 million

    (c) Publication of Compendium on the executives, legislature and the judiciary- N600 million

    (d) International Friendly Football Match- N200 million

    (e) Anniversary Parade, aerial display - N950 million.

Also in the budget is a vote of N100 million to replace the carpets at the International Conference Centre, while special Nigeria @ 50 celebration uniforms will be produced for the security services at N1 billion.A Golden Jubilee plaza will be constructed at the cost of N2.65 billion while its mounting will cost N10 million.

Monuments, sculptures, towers, gifts, souvenirs and the National Stadium velodrome will cost Nigeria's tax payers about N1.5 billion. The budget also includes a line item to spend N250 million on what it calls "equipment for safe aircraft parking at 5 airports" while the sum of N1 billion is to be spent on provision of additional parking at the Abuja airport. The Abuja airport itself will gulp the sum of N1.3 billion for "renovation.
