The conferences of speakers of state houses of assemblies will on Thursday July 8, present the resolution of the state assemblies to the conference committee of the National Assembly on the first amendment of the 1999 constitution.
The presentation will be done by the Conference of Speakers of the State Assemblies, an association of the state speakers, who had on June 15 collected the draft amended constitution on behalf of the state assemblies.
The process of ratification of the amendment to the constitution by states Houses of Assembly has been uneven. Some of the state lawmakers have ratified the changes; while others are still discussing its contents.
Constitutionally, the amendment of the constitution requires the support of two-third of the 36 state houses of assembly for it to become law.
Some lawmakers in the states have kicked against some parts of the amendment.
