The Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has insisted that that the amended constitution has become operational in the country.

Speaking during a visit to the scene of the burnt PDP secretariat in Abuja, Senator Ekwerenmadu said that only the court can set aside the constitution as amended, adding that in absent of this, Nigerians are bound to abide by the new constitution.

The amended constitution is currently generating debates among Nigerians with some people arguing that it needs presidential assent before it could become operational, while others defer.

In fact, a case is still pending in court in which some lawyers are seeking the order of the court to declare the amendment null and void unless it is signed by the president.

But Ekweremadu said, "The amendment is operational. Until they (the opponents of the amendment) seek legal interpretation, the amendment has become operational."
