A report of the senate committee on housing has faulted the sale of government houses by officials of the presidential implementation committee.

The report found the committee accused the officials of using funds realised from the sales of the houses for self gratification to the tune of 80 billion Naira deposited in several accounts at 2% interest rate.

The report also says that monies to the tune of 1.2 billion Naira which was meant to be paid to the Federal Government is missing and accused the former minister of housing and urban development, Mr. Chuka Odom and some government officials of obstructing investigations.

While debating on the report, lawmakers decried the untold hardship caused to citizens as a result of the action of the presidential committee and backed the recommendation that it should be sanctioned.

Other lawmakers called on the executive to re-instate all tenants evicted from the sold houses and be given the right of first refusal on the property, but they cautioned that tenants should not abuse the process.

Ruling on the debate, the deputy senate president, Sen. Ike Ekwerenmadu directed the committee to provide the senate with a list of all government officials involved in the sales of the Federal Government houses in its final report and that the executive should re-instate the tenants evicted from the houses and give them the right of first refusal on the houses as recommended by lawmakers.

It directed the committee to provide a list of the indicted officials of the presidential committee and submit its final report to the senate within six weeks.
