The Senate yesterday rejected President Goodluck Jonathan's nomination of Justice Pius Olayiwola Aderemi as Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

This followed the adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Drugs Narcotics Financial Crimes and Anti-Corruption which found the nominee too old for the ICPC job.

The report said, at over 70 years, Justice Aderemi is too old to effectively carry out the function of head of the anti-graft agency.

Chairman of the Committee, Senator Sola Akinyede (PDP, Ekiti) also said the nominee could not answer some questions put to him by the committee during screening on the operations of the commission.

"As a retired Justice of the Supreme Court, the integrity of the nominee is not in doubt. The committee however, has serious concerns about the capacity and ability of the nominee to meet the demands of the job."

After much debate on the issue, majority of senators supported the recommendation of the committee for the nominee to be disqualified due to old age and lack of capacity to head the ICPC.
