2011 Ministerial Nomination List - The People, The Issues : There were indications at the weekend that President Goodluck Jonathan’s list of appointees to the federal cabinet may be ready by the first week immediately after his inauguration on May 29.
Presidency sources confirmed Saturday night that Jonathan is determined to hit “the ground running” and would like to speed up the appointment of key cabinet positions to assist him in the task of governance.
“Those days when we had to wait two to three months before the cabinet list is ready are over. A list will be sent to the senate within days of the president’s inauguration,” the source added.
How ever , The various lists of possible ministerial nominees sent to the national secretariat of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) by respective state chapters of the party have raised outrage among the Nigerian populace. The expectation of most Nigerians is that the cabinet that will work with President Goodluck Jonathan after May 29 should be made up of “Nigerians who have distinguished themselves as leaders in their various fields of endeavour and not tired politicians, business moguls who owe their wealth to rent seeking” from the Nigerian state and those who failed in their bids for various elective offices in last month’s elections.
The names sent to Jonathan for consideration include those of: Patricia Etteh, who was disgraced as speaker of the House of Representatives; Tunji Olurin, former commander of ECOMOG, who failed in his bid to win the gubernatorial election in Ogun State; Jimoh Ibrahim, a business mogul; Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who was sacked by the court as the governor of Osun State, among others.
Immediately the list was published, business leaders and other concerned Nigerians inundated BusinessDay with telephone calls to express their displeasure at the calibre of people the ruling party has assembled for the president to choose from and appoint as ministers.
Many of the callers questioned the competence of the party to make such recommendations if the list it presented is the best the party can present as ministerial nominees.
Outgoing governors angling to become ministers in the next cabinet of President Goodluck Jonathan might have lost out, it emerged yesterday.
Jonathan may have dropped majority of the state governors ministerial nominees due to what the source said is his resolve not to limit the ministerial appointments to politicians. It was learnt from sources in the presidency that the President may have decided to personally select people he believes have the capacity to properly implement his policy and programme and would not want to take chances by appointing governors’ stooges .
