The number of inmates that have returned to Bauchi prison after the attack on Tuesday, September 7, evening by the Boko-Haram Islamic faithful has swelled to over one hundred and twenty. While the police arrested some inmates in various hideouts, others voluntarily returned to the prison yard.
Controller General of Nigeria Prisons, Olusola Adigun Ogundipe while inspecting the Bauchi prison after the attack confirmed the return of some of the inmates while security agents are on the trail of other escapees. He assured that culprits of the attack both within and outside will be fished out and appropriately punished.
The prison boss observed that the assault by the attackers was a surprise which caught the few armed guards on duty unaware and were over powered before gaining entrance into the main prison yard forcefully, after breaking the doors.
The city of Bauchi, North East Nigeria witnessed another disturbances that lasted for few hours on Tuesday, September 7, and will remain evergreen in the memories of Bauchi residents particularly Muslim faithful including the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Suleiman Rilwanu Adamu who were held hostage by the Islamic sect supporters of Boko Haram while praying at the central mosque shortly after the breaking of Ramadan fasting.
Different weapons were applied by the attackers in breaking the main gate of the prison yard with homemade grenade, cutters, hammers and sophisticated arms.
The attackers freed about seven hundred and twenty one prisoners including one hundred and twenty three Boko-Haram sect members awaiting trial, following their arrest last year after they attacked police formations in Bauchi state.
After the operation that lasted for about two hours with residents running helter-skelter to avoid been hit by stray bullets, some were injured while one soldier, a police and two civilians died in the process. The injured including prison warders are receiving treatment at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital. Several callers condemned the attack on the prison yard and the manner it was executed.
