The Police in the northern Nigerian State of Kano have killed a member of a suspected armed robbery gang along the ever busy Zaria-Kano Road.

The police opened fire on the suspected armed robbers when they attempted to rob the convoy of a gubernatorial aspirant on the platform of All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya who was said to be on a campaign tour in the area.

Eye witnesses told Channels Television that the suspected armed robbers numbering about five mounted a road block on the Kano-Zaria road to rob motorists, shooting sporadically into the air to scare road users
The police engaged the suspected robbers for about 30 minutes, leaving one of them dead while others were said to have escaped with gunshot wounds.

The Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Police Command, ASP Magaji Musa who confirmed the incident, says a team of police detectives have been drafted to comb the area and track down the fleeing robbers.

The Police Spokesman says one double-barrel gun, cartridges, two empty shells and two clubs were among items recovered from the armed robbery gang.

The copse of the shot suspected armed robber has been deposited at the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital mortuary while investigations are under way.
