Lagos — Over 165 kilogrammes of white substances suspected to be cocaine with a street value of about $10.2 million (about N6.827 billion) were yesterday intercepted in a terminal at the Lagos port by security agents, comprising officials of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The hard drug whose origin was said to be the South American nation, Bolivia, was imported into the country in a 20 feet container, number MSCU 12873/1 on board M/V ALDEBARAN, a Spanish flagged vessel.
Daily Champion learnt that the vessel arrived at Tin-Can Island Port (TCIP) through Apapa port on December 25, 2010 while the hard drug was discovered during a 100 per cent physical examination on the container by a combined team of customs men and NDLEA operatives at the Ports and Cargo terminal, TCIP, yesterday.
The drug haul was made up of four wraps in a carton; each wrap contains 1.1 kilogrammes, while there were 36 cartons in all in the container.
However, no arrests had been made at press time, even as the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of TCIP Customs command, said investigation is on-going.
He said the importer of the hard drug is currently at large though he assured that security agents will leave no stone unturned in getting to the root of the drug import. He also said that Nigeria will remain an unprofitable route for drug barons, saying official of Nigeria Customs Service are now well mobilized by the Comptroller General of Custom to ensure that no dangerous good or harmful imports, including drugs and ammunition enters the country.
