WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Tuesday morning started on a sour note for the staff at Wells Fargo Bank in Winter Haven after a man walked in and handed a teller a note demanding cash.
Police say the teller never saw a gun, but that the suspect "implied that he had a weapon."
The man was caught on surveillance cameras inside the bank. Police K-9's tracked the suspected robber a few blocks away from the bank.
"We recovered some clothing items and some other items that we believe the suspect left behind as he was fleeing," said Chief Gary Hester of the Winter Haven Police Department.
As the search widened, officers noticed they were getting close to a school zone.
"We were running a track and looking for the suspect in the area of a couple of our local schools and those schools were placed on lockdown, just out of an abundance of caution," he said.
Jerianna Dawson happened to be volunteering at the time inside the library at Bringham Academy -- one of three schools locked down.
"No one was to move until they gave the OK," she said. "They did an excellent job."
The schools were given the all-clear about an hour later. Many parents didn't even know the lockdown had occurred, but were pleased with the 'better safe than sorry' attitude.
"Precaution is always good," said David Meverden, who came to Bringham Academy to visit his grandson at lunchtime. "I think it was good they did that."
Police say they are still tracking down leads, but so far have not found a suspect.
