Jos witness another attack as FOURTEEN persons were killed in a pre-dawn attack on the village of Vwang Fwil in Vwang District of Jos South local government council of Plateau State yesterday.
There are fears of more casualty figures, as many are reported still missing from their homes, following the raid.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Youth Mobilisation, Mr. Adamu Bala, led a team of journalists to the scene of the attack.
No arrests have been made so far but villagers were said to have pursued the attackers, said to be well armed, with some hope of closing in on them,
There was also an attack yesterday at Barkin Ladi local government in the morning. Soldiers of the STF were on ground and they repelled the attackers, arresting an armed man in the process.
The Fulani man is now with the STF for preliminary investigation prior to being handed over to the Police for further investigation and prosecution.
Chairman of the council, Mr. Emmanuel Loman, who confirmed the development, praised the STF unit commander posted to the area, saying: “The man has really tried. He is a good army officer who knows his job very well and does it professionally.”
Chairman of Jos South local government where the attack took place, Mr. Moses Dalyop, who conducted reporters round said 13 people were shot dead.
He said that of the three assailants who were injured, one died even before the arrival of journalists, bringing casualty figure to 14.
“In the night, around 12.30am, we heard some strange noise. At this odd time we knew something was happening. Those people who came to attack us were speaking Fulani and were pointing at houses. They all dressed in military uniforms. One pregnant woman who was in labour was one of those killed. They shot their victims and those who did not die immediately were later macheted to death,” Dalyop said.
Dalyop said the locals who attempted to pursue the attackers later abandoned the mission on grounds that it was too dangerous and the fleeing men had sophisticated weapons.
Also, yesterday, a Fulani herdsman, Mohammed Abdullahi, was paraded before journalists by the spokesman of the STF, Captain Charles Ekeocha, saying he was one of the attackers who came to Barkin Ladi in the night.
“Soldiers pursued them to the bush. They did not even injure one person because our troops were there. The people in that area said they needed soldiers and that was why we were there to protect them. Our troops were able to catch this Mohammed Abdullahi.”
