A suspected Boko Haram militant on Saturday shot dead Alhaji Babakura Fugu, a brother-in-law of late Boko Haram leader, Mohammed Yusuf.
Fugu was shot dead about 24 hours after speaking to newsmen on former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s visit to the family.
Fugu, a secondary school teacher, was the eldest son of late Fugu Mohammed, the father-in-law of the late Boko Haram leader.
The relations of the deceased told newsmen in Maiduguri that the late Fugu was shot around 1.30 p.m. in front of his family house near the low cost housing estate in Maiduguri.
“He was sitting in front of Babagana Marte’s house discussing with some friends when a gunman wearing a kaftan shot him at close range,’’ a relation, Malam Modu Bulama said.
Bulama said Fugu was preparing for Zuhr prayer with his friends and about three other persons were sitting opposite him but none of them was affected in the shooting.
“The gunman must have known him very well as he went only for him without mistake”.
A family member, who craved anonymity, blamed the killing on the media report on ex-President Obasanjo’s visit to the family on Thursday.
“The sect was not happy at the way he spoke to newsmen on the visit particularly the way he tried to separate his family from the sect’s demands.’’
The late Fugu on Friday commended Obasanjo’s visit to the family on Thursday, describing him as a true nationalist.
When contacted, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Simeon Midenda, confirmed the story.
Meanwhile, an unidentified plumber was slaughtered on Friday night by unknown persons at his residence in Abujan Talakawa near Bulumkutu.
Our correspondent gathered that the killers jumped over the fence before carrying out their dastardly act.
Midenda blamed the situation on the nonchalant attitude of the public.
“This is the situation we found ourselves as people are no longer their brother’s keepers.
“How can somebody slaughter an individual without the neighbours hearing the noise? At least, somebody should have alerted the security agents,” he said.
Midenda expressed regret that the police was only alerted at the time the man was long dead.
“People must learn to be their brothers keepers by giving out vital information to the police,” he said.
