The Cross River State Police command came first at the just concluded Zone 6 Police Command sports championship with a total of 98 medals while Rivers State Command emerged second.
The five-day exercise which took place at the UJ Esuene international Sports Stadium and some other designated centers within the state metropolis, Calabar had the four states that make up the Zone Six Police headquarters, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ebonyi and Rivers States competing in different sporting activities.
Cross River State won 62 gold, 27 silver and nine bronze medals to lead the zone in the competition while Rivers state that was the runner up won 85 medals made up of 47 gold, 24 silver and 14 bronze.
According to the results released by the representative of the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Zone, Mr. Solomon Arase, Commissioner of Police Akwa Ibom State, Akwa Ibom State got 42 gold, 15 silver and 1 bronze, to place third, while the fourth position went to Ebonyi State Command with a total of 19 medals, including 10 gold, 7 silver and 2 bronze medals.
Speaking at the occasion, the Assistant Inspector of Police, AIG in-charge of the zone, Mr. Mohammed D. Abubakar said that he would support the zone to win at the finals of Nigeria Police annual sports festival at Port Harcourt in November.
He said, “Like every competition, there are winners and there are also losers. In this scenario I see every participant here as a winner. A winner is someone who, after his defeat, rises up to his feet and competes again”.
He said that “with the caliber of men and women before me here, Zone 6 Command would win gold medals
at the finals of our annual games in Kaduna and Port Harcourt.”
