Jos – Constable Nelson Eric, a soldier serving with the military Special Task Force (STF) in Plateau, is to be tried for allegedly shooting and injuring one Alfred Adams, a pastor.
The STF said in a statement on Thursday in Jos that Eric would be tried foe “misapplication of firearms’’.
The statement signed by its media officer, Capt. Chales Ekeocha, said that the “ugly“ incident, which took place in the premises of the University of Jos, was “regrettable’’.
“We thank the students of the University for listening to the voice of reasoning by not taking the law into their hands.
“We want to assure the public that on our part, our standing laws on misapplication of fire arms will surely take its course after investigation,’’ the statement said.
The STF Spokesman urged the public to always report such “criminal incidents’’ to the security forces, adding that the suspect had bee arrested and handed over to the military police arm of the STF.
Investigation showed that the soldier had accosted Adams, who allegedly claimed to be a soldier, after he (Adams) attempted to snatch a cell phone from another fellow.
For fear of arrest, Adams ran into the University premises, but was pursued by Eric, who later fired at him.
The badly injured Adams was taken to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), where he is being treated.
