ABUJ – EXCEPT Nigerians urgently rise in unison and take their destinies in their hands by massively compelling government to respect their will, the country may be plunged into a surprise extra-legal intervention, Pro-National Conference Organisation, PRONACO, has warned.
Spokesman of PRONACO, Mr. Olawale Okunniyi, said the Nigeria political class had clearly shown its ill-preparedness for governance, as it had been constitutionally programmed by the military from the outset to fail. He lamented that after 12 years in power, politicians had proved to be manifestly self-serving, lacklustre and completely overwhelmed by the art of nation building.
A statement by Mr. Olubori Obafemi, PRONACO image maker, stressed that if Nigerians failed to rise up now in unison to compel the government to respect their will, they will be the worst for being accomplices to the deepening rot in the polity.
The statement said: “A broad consultation of eminent leaders of thought hosted by the leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, in collaboration with National Consensus Group of Project Nigeria last Wednesday in Abuja, confirms the recently expressed fears of President Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasanjo on possible mass revolts in Nigeria.
“Nigerians must note that the general insecurity in the land, the unabated suicide bombings, the refusal of the ruling class to open up space for genuine national negotiation as well as the politics of oil subsidy versus minimum wage are all ominous symptoms of deeper structural and governance crisis in the country, which is beyond the present rhetoric of government.
“Eminent leaders group driven by senior citizens such as Prof Ben Nwabueze, Alhaji Maitama Sule, Dr Tunji Braithwaite, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, Chief Audu Ogbeh, Dr. Kalu Idika Kalu, Dr. Lateef Adegbite, Mr. Olisa Agbakoba, labour and civil society leaders, among others, are completely disappointed at the present state of affairs in the country orchestrated by system and leadership failure.”
The former governorship candidate in Ogun State also disclosed that some well-meaning leaders of conscience and eminent persons across the country have already commenced consultation on the need for an independent national summit for political cohesion among the progressives.
