The Nigeria Immigration Service on Wednesday raided parts of Kano and arrested more than 250 illegal aliens.
Our correspondent learnt that a number of aliens in parts of the North had links with the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram.
The Comptroller of the NIS, Kano State Command, Dr. Brasca Ifeadi, said the raid was to ensure the safety of lives and property in the state.
He said 183 aliens were arrested before the public holidays, while the remaining were caught afterwards.
Ifeadi added that aliens without valid immigration documents would be repatriated.
He said, “They were arrested at five key obnoxious areas such as the Trade Fair Complex area along Zoo Road, Farm Centre (Marhaba Cinema area) along Tarauni Road, Yan Kura Roundabout, Bachirawa and Panshekara areas of the metropolis.”
According to Ifeadi, the command carried out the operation on the orders of the NIS Comptroller-General, Mrs. Rose Uzoma, in response to the security threat posed by Boko Haram to the country.
He added, “All criminal and terrorist-infested areas and hideouts within and outside Kano metropolis will be raided.”
According to him, NIS will continue to raid uncompleted buildings and abandoned projects in Kano to rid it of illegal aliens.
He said the raids were also carried out to prevent the aliens from becoming willing tools of destabilisation of peace and security in the country, describing the operation as NIS contribution to the enhancement of national security.
Ifeadi said, “This exercise which is a continuous one, is one of the Nigeria Immigration Service ways of contributing to the enhancement of our national security as all those found wanting would be repatriated immediately.”
Meanwhile, a leading member of the Elders Forum in Borno State, Bulama Gubio, claimed some politicians were benefiting from the growing security crisis in the country. He also claimed that criminal groups had been using the Boko Haram name to commit crimes and create chaos.
