The Ondo State Police Command has secured the release of Rev. Fr. Jude Gibah, who was kidnapped along the Benin-Ore Expressway on Wednesday. The Command spokesman, Aremu Adeniran said the priest was driving in his Pathfinder Sport Utility Vehicle when the kidnappers emerged from a bush at Ofosu area and attacked him.
He said detectives who were sent to the area immediately on receipt of a distress call, carried out a thorough search of the bush.
“This led to the release of the reverend father who was abandoned by his captors on hearing police gunshots,” he said.
In another development, the command has arrested five suspects thought to be among those who on Wednesday broke into the Central Medical Stores (CMS) of the Ondo State Ministry of Health, carting away items worth N34 million.
A release by Aremu said “about 20 armed hoodlums overpowered and disarmed the seven security operatives on duty on that day, tied their hands and legs and locked them up inside a toilet.”
The robbers drove in a lorry to the premises and broke into the CMS and carted away expensive drugs and hospital equipment valued at about N34m, to an unknown destination. He continued:” On the receipt of the information, a team of police detectives attached to the state Criminal Investigation Department, Akure mounted strict surveillance at some of the major markets across the country.
“Specific attention was paid to two special drugs that were specially ordered for from overseas by the state government and the strategy worked. “The drugs were invariably sighted at the Onitsha Head Bridge Drug Market, popularly called Ogbogwu Market. “This led to the arrest of five of the armed robbers and the stolen drugs.
“Large quantities of the stolen drugs worth N2 million had been recovered” Adeniran said. Other items recovered by the police from the robbers included; a long chisel, a flashlight, a pair of scissors and two padlocks. He said: “It is pertinent to state that the same syndicate had carried out some nefarious and dastard crimes at Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, and the Kogi State Central Medical Stores and escaped without being caught” He said efforts were on to arrest other fleeing members of the gang.
