The superior fire power of suspected armed robbers was unleashed on policemen at the weekend, culminating in the death of two policemen and the abduction of another in Edo State.
The tragedy, which occured when armed men struck at a check point located at Igbira camp, along the Igarra-Auchi road in Etsako West council area of the state, has increased the anxiety among officers of the Edo State police command and citizens.
The suspected robbers reportedly stormed a check point mounted by four policemen and rained bullets on the unsuspecting officers. Two AK47 rifles belonging to the dead officers were also taken away by the rampaging robbers while one of the policemen was seized and taken away alive to an unknown location.
Motorists and pedestrians were left stranded for for several hours on the lonely route in the incident, that happened in the early hour of the day. However one of the officers who escaped into a nearby bush after the sudden attack later emerged but could not utter a word when asked by passers-bye to narrate what happened.
Armed policemen on patrol, who were alerted about the development, later cleared the road to allow free movement of vehicles and motorcycle operators plying the route. This incident came barely two weeks after another set of suspected robbers attacked some policemen on routine roadcheck at Ogbemudia farm, close to Ekiadolor College of Education, Okada area of the state. Three security patrol vans belonging to the state command were burnt to ashes by the robbers.
