The Ojo Police station located on Olojo Drive, Ojo, Lagos, was a Mecca of some sorts yesterday, as people trooped to the place to catch a glimpse of seven goats arrested by the police.
Why people alleged the goats were human beings that turned into goats, the police said they were ordinary goats. The police also displayed the goats at the entrance of the police station to disprove the claim by people.
Daily Champion gathered that the mysterious goats were earlier arrested by policemen from the station during a stop and search duty on Iba –Igando road.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the area, Mr. Isaac, Oghon described the rumour as baseless and unfounded.
However, a 39-year old man who said he sells goats at the Iyano- Iba who spoke on the conditions of anonymity said the manner the goats comported themselves and sat as human beings suggested they were not ordinary goats. "I am a goat seller at the market. I have been dealing with goats but the way the goats sat comfortably suggests that they are not ordinary," he said.
The DPO however told our correspondent that the goats are native goats. He said: "You can perceive their ordour. The thing is that our policemen sighted an Audi car and attempted to stop it but the occupants of the car refused to stop and instead they escaped and abandoned the car. You can see the car parked outside. We therefore brought the car and the goat to the station. I don’t know where people got their own information."
However, Daily Champion learnt that the goats were stolen from a local market. The owner of the goat was said to have shown up in the police station. Another police source at the station said: "The occupants of the Audi Saloon car stole the goats from somewhere and that was why they refused to stop when police stopped them. They were not human beings and none of them had ever turned to human beings since we brought them to the station."
When Daily Champion inspected the car, its plate numbers had been removed.
Recently, a similar incident occurred in Ilorin, Kwara State, where police arrested a goat while pursuing an armed robbery suspect. The police claimed that the suspect changed to a goat to avoid arrest. The controversial goat was later auctioned to the public when nobody came to claim ownership.
