Prison authorities in the northern Nigerian State of Kano are having a hard time managing the congestion of inmates in various prison formations across the state.
The Comptroller of Prisons in charge of Kano Central Prisons DSP Umar Funtua dropped the hint when the wife of the Kano State Governor Hajiya Halima Shekarau paid a sympathy visit to female inmates at the over saturated prison.
DSP Umar Funtua made a passionate appeal to relevant agencies of government to as a matter of urgency fast track the trials of inmates whose cases are still pending.
Our Correspondent in Kano reports that the wife of the Kano State Governor Hajiya Halima Shekarau was at the Kano Central Prisons to assist female inmates pay off their fines in order to help decongest the prisons.
Kano Central Prison is one of the oldest in the country. Its capacity has been grossly overstretched by inmates many of whom are still awaiting trials.
The wife of the Kano State Governor who is aware of the deplorable situation in the Kano Central Prison paid off the fines of some of the female inmates so that they can be set free, admonishing them to go home and sin no more.
About 15 of the female prisoners whose fines were paid off by the Kano State first lady would be set free after completing necessary formalities.
