ASP, 9 others arrested over death of Police sergeant

An Assistant Superintendent of Police and nine other Policemen, including two drivers have been arrested and taken to Abuja in connection with the death of a Police Sergeant, Dennis Osemekhian Ojemen.

Sergeant Ojemen was shot dead in controversial circumstances during an anti-robbery operation led by a Police ASP from the Police Area Command in Benin to Agbanekaka, a boundary town between Edo and Ondo States on October 1, 2009.
The Policemen who went for the operation had claimed that Sergeant Ojemen was killed during cross-fire with armed robbers.

The late Policeman was reportedly shot on the head and was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital [UBTH], where he later died.
The family of the deceased policeman had in a petition to the Edo State Commissioner of Police and Inspector-General of Police, raised suspicion over the death of their son and husband.
In the petition, signed by the late Police Sergeant, wife, Mrs. Priscilia Ojemen, the family observed that none of the other nine policemen, nor the two buses drivers that took them for the operation sustained any injury, while there was no scratch on any of the buses in the purported shoot-out with the armed robbers.

The family suspecting foul play in the manner their son and husband was killed, therefore, urged the police to investigate the matter properly. Daily Sun learnt that the arrest of the suspects, who are now being detained in Abuja , followed the intervention of the IGP.
The remains of Sergeant Ojemen were buries at Opoji in Esan Central of Edo State on November 14, 2009.
