Members of the Nigerian armed forces were hardly seen by the generality of the people in those days. Indeed, it was as if they were forbidden to go outside their barracks then. They were regarded with hallowed respect, and considered a special breed in terms of discipline and patriotism. That was before the first military coup d'état of January 1966 in so far as their visibility to the people was concerned. After the coup, they became a common sight everywhere. However, the coup seemed to have enhanced the level of esteem in which the military was held, judging by the amount of ecstasy and jubilations that attended its announcement. To the common people, the true messiahs had come to clean up the Augean stable of rot and decay created by the civilian administration that had misruled and dashed the hopes of the country since independence in October, 1960. ..........................

xi) A military with a new orientation to commit itself to the protection of the citizens rather than intimidating, harassing, oppressing, maiming and killing them;
xii) A military that constantly keeps the politicians on their toes, thereby preventing them from keeping out of democratic norms. In this regard, the new envisioned military should not look on while politicians are engaging in blatant constitutional abuse or ignoring the rulings of the courts, and thus plunge the country into chaos or wars. A short, patriotic and purposeful military intervention is much better than a bloody revolution or civil war.
