TWO orderlies of Brigadier-General Jacob Olajide were said to have beaten an air traveler, Mr. Uche Onyeanusi last Sunday over a minor disagreement.
Onyeanusi, who is hospitalized at the National Hospital Abuja was brutalized in Arik Air flight W3161 from Lagos.
The victim who had his tooth knocked-off by Olajide's orderly told Daily Champion on phone that his ordeal started when he protested the shunning of queue by the military officer.
The duo boarded Arik Air flight w3161 in Lagos.
An eye witness told Daily Champion that Brigadier Olajide had during the argument threatened to deal with Mr. Onyeanusi. True to his word, the victim was severely manhandled and brutalized by his orderlies .
Recounting his ordeal, the victim of military brutality said: "On arrival, I got my luggage and as I was going out of the airport with a doctor that had witnessed the earlier argument, two military men assaulted me and started pounding me, when I enquired the reason, they rained more punches at me, stating that I had slapped their boss, probably the story that the man behind me in the queue told them."
"When it got too much to bear, I took to my heels leaving my luggage outside, but the men followed me into one of the offices where I sought refuge and continued beating me in there, even the ladies there were witnesses to what I went through." he said.
According to Onyeanusi, he later got a call from the Airport commandant who told him to report the incident to one of the military barracks where another general would look into the matter and call his colleague to order.
Our source who does not want his name in print said that a United States (U.S) based medical doctor, Michael Ihemaguda, who was on the same flight tried to intervene in the matter but was told by a police officer to steer clear of the issue.
When contacted Dr. Ihemaguda told our correspondent that what happened at the airport was wrong.
"I was walking with him (the victim) when we went to claim our luggage when the man's orderlies started beating him up, I confronted him and asked him why he would carry a vendetta from Lagos and even lie that he was slapped. They would have killed this man if he did not run, they were kicking him and hitting him, one even broke a bottle and wanted to stab him with the broken pieces. I tried to make him know that he was taking the laws into his own hands because he is a general."
However, Airport Commandant of the Abuja Airport, Group Captain SDB Mohammed said that there was a mistake in the identity of the military officer involved in the imbroglio, as Brigadier General Olajide who was on the flight manifest was not the one who beat up the victim.
He said," I personally checked the flight manifest myself to see if there was a military officer on board the aircraft and came up with Brigadier General Olajide, then I called the Directorate of Military intelligence who also said that he (General Olajide) was not the one but as God would have it the real officer, who is also a very senior personnel owned up."
"According to him, he was not shunting and only came to confirm if the boarding pass was ready, it was then that the argument ensued, mind you this happened in Lagos and we have taken the statements of the young man who came to report the incident."
"However, I called the man who claimed that he was manhandled to meet with the officers but two days ago they waited for him till 6pm and yesterday they waited till four and he did not show up, you cannot keep senior personnel who have important things to do waiting, I called him and he said he was in hospital and when I called later he said he would come with his lawyer."
