A group that calls itself Delta Democratic Militia has claimed responsibility for the explosion at, and razing, of the Ughelli office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Delta State.
The hitherto unknown group said that it carried out the attack simply to warn against electoral malpractice in the state.
In an email on Tuesday in Warri, signed by one Lt. Tamuno Labutua, the warned of more of such attacks should anybody attempt to rig the re-run election be being conducted by INEC today rigged.
According to the statement, â€Å"This strike is a serious warning to INEC, all security agencies and political parties that election rigging of all kind shall no longer be tolerated in Delta State.
We wish to make it abundantly clear that only a free, fair and credible election will be acceptable to Deltans. Only a governor that emerges by popular votes shall govern Delta.
Any attempt by INEC officials, security agencies to rig Delta State election shall mean steady killing of such persons, their wives and children.
The group stated that it would not stop such killings until justice is achieved for the common people of Delta State.
The statement however urged the people of the state to vote according to their conscience and be ready to defend their votes and mandate.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Charles Muka, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) confirmed the incident and said that the police has commenced investigation into the incident.
