Default IG bans use of siren on highways

The Inspector-General of Police, Hafiz Abubakar Ringim, has ordered a total ban on the use of siren by unauthorised person or group of persons across the country.

Ringim has consequently directed all the Zonal AIGs and Command CPs to arrest any person or group of persons found violating the order and charge them to court accordingly.

The order was handed down, because of the security report on the unlawful use of sirens by some government officials and private individuals, especially in the South-East and South-West geo-political zones of the country.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olusola Amore, a DCP, state in Abuja on Friday, that the siren users had no due care and attention for other road users, and were thus endangering life of pedestrians and commuters.

He said, “For the avoidance of doubt and for the records, the IG wishes to remind the public that only the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Vice-President, state governors and their deputies (outside of FCT) are authorised to wail or blare on the public highways.

“Other categories of road users that may use siren include, Ambulance and Fire Brigade Services on emergency or rescue operations. Bullion vans with special escorts are also authorised to use sirens.”
